  3. A couple of questions... British battalions had two flags, Spanish battalions had one. how many did the Gran columbians have per battalion?

And are there any lists online of Spanish regiments' facing colours?

    1. Hello Rob, from what I have researched all units only carried one flag at a time. Perhaps the British Legion may have carried their Battalion flag and Gran Colombian flag is some instances, but mostly just a single flag. As the legion was often made up of amalgamated units the flag may often have changed as well. For the gran Colombians, just one flag. From 1812 to 1819, this would have been the "War to the Death" flag, other units carring just a plain black flag, or a flag with a skull and crossbones on it and the writing "Libertad o Muerte." All these signified that no prisoners would be taken in battle. From 1818/19 onwards you see the Gran Colombian flag much more (which is similar to the modern Colombian flag). These would have had either 3 small white stars in the top corner by the pole, or a battalion emblem in the middle of the same flag (as I have done with some of the British Legion flags).

Facing colours of many Spanish regimenst varied by year, as did their actual uniforms. This was the same in Spain at this time during the Peninsular war. Let me know which regiment you want and I can find the details. John Fletcher has some good books on the War in the South, which has all the Spanish uniform details for the battles in Chile and some in Peru. Some examples, in 1818 the Burgos regiment had green cuffs and collars, the Arequipa regiment blue, and the Infante Don Carlos regiment red, and so on. All these worn a white/cream brin tropical uniform (i.e.short jackets without tails). Hope that helps rather than confuses :-)
